Arona becomes the second municipality in the Canary Islands to obtain the title of Solidarity City with Alzheimer’s



The municipality of Arona, in Tenerife, has obtained the title of Solidarity City with Alzheimer’s, a distinction granted by the Spanish Confederation of Associations of Relatives of People with Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias (CEAFA) to regions that reinforce care and awareness about this disease, and that in the rest of the Canary Islands it only has the town of Tías (Lanzarote).

The councilor for the Senior Citizens and Social Services area of ​​the town hall, Ruth Lorenzo, has indicated in a statement that for the municipality it is “important” to address the ailments of the population of Arona that is affected by this problem, which requires “programs and specific actions”.

In this regard, he stressed that the town hall recently signed an agreement with the Association of Relatives and Caregivers of Alzheimer’s Patients and other Dementias (Afate) that allows residents who suffer from this disease to receive a physiotherapy service at home, which is joins the one that already existed on cognitive stimulation.

Likewise, Lorenzo has advanced that these actions will be increased with training workshops in senior centers on this ailment, so that people who belong to this group “know how to differentiate and determine” their symptoms. On the other hand, awareness-raising activities will be carried out in educational centers, with the aim that students learn to treat the elderly who suffer from them.
