The La Laguna City Council will rehabilitate Casa Menéndez, in the Gracia-Finca España area, to turn it into a large space for cultural use. The Government group has approved entrusting the public company Gesplan with the drafting of the basic and execution project for the rehabilitation of this building, located specifically on Pico Cho Canino street, next to Los Menceyes avenue. The drafting of the project has a budget of 75,345 euros and an execution period of eight months.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, who visited the property yesterday, explained that “the recovery of Casa Menéndez represents a boost to our commitment to culture, by having a new infrastructure that can become a place of reference for the creation, dissemination and diffusion of the different artistic disciplines”.
Luis Yeray Gutiérrez also emphasized “the enormous possibilities offered by this space, not only because of the dimensions and characteristics of the property, but also because of the large garden area that surrounds it, which will allow combining both work in different rooms and proposals in the open air”.
The building, a family home that became the property of the City Council as a free space for an urban action unit, dates from 1949 and has three floors with a constructed area of almost 500 square meters. It is located on a landscaped plot of 6,551 square meters, also municipal property, whose maintenance is carried out by the Parks and Gardens service.
In addition, this plot is located next to another currently in disuse of more than 5,000 square meters, also municipal property, considered urbanistically as a facility, which “will allow us, when the time comes, to plan even more cultural resources for the area.” explains Luis Yeray Gutiérrez.
Although the general state of conservation of the building is good, the rehabilitation project commissioned by the Works and Infrastructures area must contemplate a comprehensive interior and exterior reform action and address various deficiencies that the building presents, such as solving accessibility conditions . In addition, the adaptation of the acoustic conditions of each of the spaces will be carried out so that the practice of the different artistic activities does not generate interference.
