SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 1 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife, in collaboration with the City Council of La Orotava, has organized a conference to promote the conservation and consumption of the pajarita apple, a traditional variety that is only grown on the island.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock, Javier Parrilla, indicated that through these types of events the aim is to continue protecting and enhancing the native products and varieties of Tenerife, whether meat, oils, honey, wines or, as in this case, fruits.
In this sense, the island official wanted to remind us that there are 33 apple varieties typical of Tenerife, all of them in conservation, although the pajarita apple, located mainly in the middle and upper areas of La Orotava, is one of the most symbolic and remembered by the population.
For his part, the insular director of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cayetano Silva, added that the insular Corporation has been working for several years on a project for the conservation of the pajarita apple.
“Since 2004, a special collaboration has been developing between farmers, who are the true preservers of this variety; the Center for the Conservation of Agricultural Biodiversity of Tenerife (CCBAT); the Agricultural Extension Agencies; cooks and nurserymen, who has made it possible for this ancient apple not to be lost,” he added.
This week’s activities, which conclude today Saturday, include gastronomic exhibitions, guided tours and technical conferences on the conservation, pollination and characterization of the bird apple, held at the Liceo de Taoro.
Yesterday, Friday, a live culinary demonstration took place directed by chef Pedro Rodríguez Dios, which included the participation of renowned chefs such as: Yeray Abalde (Restaurant Sorimba), Zebenzuí Acosta (La Factoría Espacio Gastronómico) and Kike Luis (Restaurant Dabeke).
The program of events will conclude with a guided tour of farms in the Valle de La Orotava, which will culminate in the municipality’s farmer’s market, with a pastry tasting based on this product.
