The Ryanair plane that blocked the runway at Tenerife Sur airport After aborting the takeoff this Saturday, it has already been withdrawn, with which the aerodrome is operational again, sources from Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) have informed Efe.
The incident on the runway of the airport in the south of Tenerife has caused the diversion of twelve flights, of which five have been derived to Tenerife North, six to Gran Canaria and one to Faro (Portugal), AENA sources added.
At the same time, the air traffic controllers have released a video on their social networks in which the withdrawal of the aircraft, which has been towed, and the confirmation that the Tenerife Sur runway is again “free and operational” can be seen.
Even so, they point out that it will take time to regain normality in the flow of air traffic since flights diverted to alternative aerodromes must return to the airport.
However, AENA sources have indicated that it is not expected that there will be many more affected flights, having managed to clear the runway two hours earlier than initially set by Eurocontrol.
Landing and takeoff operations at the Tenerife South airport were initially paralyzed until 7:00 p.m. this Saturday after a Ryanair plane got stuck on the runway after aborting takeoff.
The plane corresponding to Ryanair flight B738 was immobilized when the crew decided for safety to abort the takeoff because apparently the brakes reached a high temperature and were blocked, according to air traffic controllers.
The incident has caused significant delays in flights to and from the island, with several of them diverted to alternative airports, including a medical one.
Sources from Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) told Efe that at first three flights were diverted to Tenerife North and another three to Gran Canaria and no flights were taking off from the aeronautical facilities in the south of the island.
Subsequently, Eurocontrol issued an order to Rate Zero for flights to Tenerife South, which meant not authorizing takeoffs to that airport initially until 7:00 p.m. this Saturday, which has finally been resolved.
