A group of renowned specialists in the field of volcanology will analyze in the Summer University of Adeje different facets of the eruption of the Tajogaite volcanoin The Palm, and the consequences of this eruptive phenomenon that lasted 85 days. This course, entitled The eruption of Cumbre Vieja on La Palma 2021directed by the professor of the Department of Animal Biology, Edaphology and Geology of the University of La Laguna, Maria Candelaria Martin Luiswill develop between July 20 and 22 at the Cultural Center of Adejefrom 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
These experts from different specialties They will be in charge of examining the characteristics, monitoring and consequences of this recent eruptive process that began on September 19 in the municipality of El Paso and that concluded on December 13, 2021, ending 85 days of eruption in which there were around 9,000 earthquakes on the island of La Palma.
Among the specialists who will give the keynote speeches is Ramon Casillas Ruiz, Professor of Petrology and Geochemistry at the Department of Animal Biology, Edaphology and Geology at the University of La Laguna. Casillas, representative of the ULL in the scientific committee of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Attention due to volcanic risk in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (Pevolca) will address the geological evolution of the insular building of La Palma as the context in which the eruption took place and will tell the chronological account of this last eruptive phenomenon in the Canary Islands.
Another important aspect addressed by the course is the analysis of the different types of volcanic activity recorded during the eruption and its contextualization within the framework of the historical eruptions that occurred on the island. This issue will be developed in the talk by Maria Candelaria Martin Luisdirector of the course and also substitute representative of the ULL in the Pevolca scientific committee.
Among the speakers, Ramón Casillas, Candelaria Martín, Itahiza Domínguez or Pedro Torres
Scientific surveillance around the eruptive process is part of the content that two researchers who are members of the Volcanology and Volcanic Surveillance Unit of the National Geographic Institute (IGN): Itahiza Domínguez Sardinia and Pedro Torres Gonzálezwho will show the attendees the surveillance network deployed by the institute during the eruption and will analyze the seismic, deformation and gas emission phenomena, both prior to, simultaneous with and after the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano.
The course culminates with interventions by the insular director of Security of the Council of Tenerife and researcher of the cultural chair Disaster Risk Reduction, Ruben David Fernandez Gonzalezwho will expose the plans of action against the volcanic crisis, and the scientific journalist Victor Manuel Melo Lopezpresident of the Canary Islands Volcanoes Association, responsible for analyzing the media coverage of the eruption and the importance of scientific dissemination in these crisis situations.
This seminar, open to the general public, is especially recommended for undergraduate and postgraduate students, especially Environmental Sciences, Biology, Geography and Territorial Planning«because they will not only know the volcanic risk that the eruption entailed, but they will also learn to interpret the volcanic relief created after the process and to value the geological heritage of the Canary Islands».
The price of the course is 25 euros and the transportation of attendees to any of the seminars and workshops of this edition is free. The organization of the Summer University of Adeje will cover the cost of round trip transportation from the metropolitan area (Santa Cruz-La Laguna) to Adeje, after completing a registration form.
