The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, has advanced this Friday that in the outbreak of fire that affected two hectares of dry material in Santiago del Teide on Thursday, the drones with a thermographic camera acquired for the campaign against fires were used for the first time forestry.
“The tools for controlling and extinguishing forest fires can no longer be limited to a fleet of vehicles, hand tools and hoses, but it is essential to evolve in the endowments and adapt them to the new possibilities offered by cutting-edge technologies”, indicated the president .
For this reason, the corporation has incorporated three new drones with two types of cameras, one traditional and the other thermographic, “which will allow it to reach inaccessible points and even fly at night when a helicopter cannot do so in reconnaissance tasks,” he stressed.
Thus, firefighting technicians will be able to locate hot spots and finish off “more efficient” outbreaks and fires, he pointed out.
“This provision, which will be coupled with training for the agents who operate the drones, is a pioneer in the planning of campaigns against fires on the islands, and will open a door to technology that had not been produced until now. on the island”, recalled Martín.
For the president of Tenerife, “it is a commitment of the Cabildo to renew the provision of Brifor, and we have begun to do so with the replacement of some vehicles and next year we will continue to replace pumpers that have become obsolete, because it is not understood how in something so delicate as firefighting has not been invested in to always be up-to-date”.
Likewise, in order to improve the capabilities of this year’s firefighting operation, a continuous training program will be carried out throughout the campaign, where questions about intervention are addressed in two areas that are especially significant in Tenerife, such as firefighting techniques. in large fires and actions in interface fires.
