There is a Canarian saying that says that «San Juan is a crybaby». And farmers often claim that this rain “soaks but does not wet”. It is mostly talked about on the north face of Tenerife, the most affected every June and July by this little winter with which summers usually begin. This year’s episode of cool temperatures, abundant cloudiness and drizzle began just with the arrival of the summer period, on June 21And it will last until this weekend. Because from Monday, according to the delegation of the Meteorology Agency (Aemet) in the Canary Islands, the skies will begin to clear and temperatures will begin to reach normal values for this time.

This little winter is brought by the trade winds, the winds that mark the climate in the Archipelago, with jets of humid air coming from the north that reach their maximum intensity precisely between the months of June and July. This explains it David Suárez, delegate of the Aemet in the Archipelago. «This cloudiness and these drizzles at the beginning of summer are frequent in the Islands. In these last days, the situation of the anticyclone and Los Alisios have allowed the entry of winds loaded with humidity and coming from the north». As detailed by Suárez, as of tomorrow, the anticyclone will go to the east and those humid flows will stop reaching the Canary Islands, with which the thermometers will rise and it will be possible to enjoy the beaches again throughout the day.

The drizzle continued yesterday, as it has since the beginning of the week. The municipality with the most rainfall has been The lagoon. Yesterday morning 16.6 liters per square meter fell. Tacoronte also got wet, with 8.2. The bad weather caused yesterday even the suspension of two acts in the university municipality that were going to be held yesterday: La Laguna World Beer, a festival dedicated to beer, and the Cattle Walk through La Cañada Lagunera of the San Benito Festivities. Others were held in the open air, such as the Craft Fair in La Cuesta or the march in favor of the fight against cancer for the helmet, organized by the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

The trade winds were also noticeable in the temperatures, with maximums that, like Thursday, did not exceed 24 degrees in Tenerife. Yesterday there was more heat, which mixed with the humidity generated a feeling of embarrassment in some parts of the Island, especially at noon and in the afternoon. The thermometers marked a maximum of 26.4 degrees in Güímar and 26.2 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the South airport.
