SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 16 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –
Rakuten TV has started filming its next original production: ‘Discovering Canary Islands’, an adventure reality show led by Pilar Rubio as presenter and which, in its first edition, will tour the Canary Islands.
The program will discover the most incredible and unusual myths of the Archipelago by immersing its contestants in local culture and traditions; a journey of discovery full of tests, enigmas and routes through wonderful territories that will show contestants and spectators the legend of a region.
For the first time, an OTT platform is committed to an international format where eight contestants from eight different nationalities will compete to be the best explorer in Europe. The participants, with an influencer profile and who have not yet been revealed, will find out that, in reality, the islands that make up Las Canarias are not eight, but nine.
La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera hide their own legend. Between reality and folklore, history and fiction, it is said that there is a ninth island: San Borondón. Known as Isla Ballena, due to the way it appears and disappears in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, it has been the dream of cartographers and navigators for centuries and the objective of the participants.
‘Discovering Canary Islands’ has the support of Promotur – Turismo de Canarias and is designed and co-produced by Atlantia Media and Mediabrands Content Studio/Initiative. The creative team has extensive experience in production in Spain and internationally of innovative entertainment formats (‘Survivors’, ‘Big Brother’, ‘Peking Express’…). Led by Paolo Nocetti, executive producer, and Constantino Martínez, director of R&D and entertainment, this first season will be directed by Cristina Jiménez, a specialist in entertainment and reality shows.
The person in charge of hosting the program will be Pilar Rubio, an internationally known Spanish presenter who has extensive experience on television. Rubio, with more than 7.5 million followers on her Instagram account, is enthusiastic about the project: “I am happy to be able to present this international format and that it will reach 42 European countries. It is a format with which I feel very identified: a family program, full of adventures in a unique enclave, like the Canary Islands”.
The most spectacular settings in the Canary Islands will be the setting for impressive tests of strength, ingenuity and skill in a dynamic race that will tour the Islands in six episodes. During the program, each test is a key to the next one, offering an advantage or reward, and the possibility of obtaining at the end of each stage a clue in the form of a coordinate and part of the legend to finally reach the final objective: Saint Borondon. With this new project, one of the objectives is to continue positioning the Canary Islands as the preferred tourist destination for Europeans.
‘Discovering Canary Islands’ will join the Rakuten Stories collection, featuring original and exclusive Rakuten TV content with stories of optimism, empowerment and diversity that reflect the company’s DNA. Cristian Liarte, director of the originals area, comments: “We are delighted to present this never-before-made format that allows us to unite the values of Rakuten TV with quality entertainment for a wide and European audience.”
The reality series will hit screens during the second half of the year and will be available exclusively and free of charge in Rakuten TV’s linear and on-demand programming, with a presence in 43 European territories.
