The City Council of Santa Cruz proceeded yesterday afternoon to cordon off, urgently, part of the Plaza de San Francisco due to the risk posed by the poor condition of the church bell tower, so, “as a precaution”, it was decided avoid the pedestrian crossing in that part of the square.
As confirmed to DIARIO DE AVISOS by the Urban Planning councilor, Carlos Tarife, “the Management technicians have verified that the structure that supports the hood is not in good condition, so we have decided to cordon off part of the square as a precaution, with what the restaurants in the area will not be able to have tables in that part of the public space ”. “The next thing we will do is order the owner to fix that bell tower so that it does not end up falling,” added the mayor.
However, throughout the afternoon, according to Tarife itself, the Government of the Canary Islands, which is carrying out some works in the building next to the church, where the headquarters of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands is located, reported to the Management that it would proceed to dismantle the bell next Tuesday, with which the seal of that part of the square can be lifted. The same administration informed Urbanism that it will be the one in charge of repairing the structure of the bell tower to return the bell as soon as the arrangement is ready.
