“Canary Islands is outside of Spain”

Eurovision 2022 it’s just around the corner and Spanish Radio Television is already reporting on the preview of the song festival to be held on May 14 in Turin. And to warm up the engines from the public channel they are conducting interviews with the participants from the different countries who are asked about their relationship with Spain: their favorite places and, if they have been, their experiences in the country.

Among the different artists is Brooke Scullion, the representative of Ireland who stated in an interview that she loves “food and good beaches” from Spain, since in her country “there are beaches but they are cold, while yours are incredible”. So far, everything said by the contestant is irreproachable, but she then spoils it by saying that “In fact, I go to Tenerife a lot. I know it’s not Spain, but it’s an island outside of Spain“he has stated.

The words of the representative of Ireland, who has affirmed that Tenerife is outside of Spain, have not taken long to arouse controversy on social networks, where she has received both critical and more friendly comments from people who have taken it with a good dose of humour, where the joke has not been lacking.

“Did the artist mean that the Canary Islands are not in the Iberian Peninsula or does she really think that the Archipelago is not a part of Spain?”; “Literally the representative of Ireland in Eurovision asked for the independence of the Canary Islands”are some of the witty comments made on social networks.

Who is Brooke Scullion?

Brooke Scullion, artistically known simply as Brooke, is a 23-year-old singer who was born on March 31, 1999 in the town of Bellaghy, in Londonderry County, Northern Ireland. Her father is a co-founder of Premier Electrics, an electrical installation company that has worked on projects in countries across Europe since 1993. During her school years she was constantly involved in performing arts workshops, participating in local singing competitions and performing in musicals. during high school, including Mamma Mia, Sister Act, and Fame. At only twelve years old, she participated in her first professional contest, the “Rising Stars” contest, performing a version of Rihanna’s “Stay”, which made her the winner.

Her song “That’s rich” is composed in English by Brooke herself and the British authors and producers Izzy Warner and Karl Zine. The artist has confessed in several interviews that her theme was destined to sound in the film “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga”, released in June 2020. In it, the composition team tried to mix the flavor of eighties music with touches of current music. The song spent the entire pandemic in a drawer and when he found out that Ireland would once again choose its representative through a public national final, he saw the moment to give it the widest possible projection, he entered the contest and won it.
