The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council of Santiago del Teide undertake works to improve the Los Gigantes area, in order to promote the tourist development of the municipality. The investment amounts to 1,550,000 euros to intervene on the beach and on various roads in Playa de La Arena. The contribution of the department directed by Yaiza Castilla is 850,000 euros and is part of the 1,200,000 euros committed to tourist infrastructure in areas of the municipality.
The first of the new actions is carried out in Playa de la Arena with a subsidy from Turismo de Canarias of 250,000 euros and involves improving access conditions. The second action costs 1.3 million euros, of which 600,000 euros are provided by the Ministry and the rest by the City Council. About to be tendered, it is the improvement and refurbishment of Adelfas, Tamara and José González Forte streets, in Los Gigantes.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Teresa Berástegui, visited the area yesterday together with the Mayor, Emilio Navarro; the Councilor for Tourism, Luz Goretti, and the General Director of Tourism Infrastructure, Fernando Miñarro.
“Actions such as those being carried out in Santiago del Teide enhance the image of the municipality, the tourist activity and the socioeconomic development of the area, while creating a better and more habitable space for the enjoyment of those who visit us and of residents of the area,” according to Berástegui.
The mayor, Emilio Navarro, pointed out that “the collaboration between the two administrations is bearing fruit” and emphasized the economic effort of the City Council, contributing almost 50% of these works, “with which we intend to continue delving into the renovation of our tourist spaces, that will serve to continue being a competitive destination».
In Playa de La Arena, the works include carrying out pedestrian routes, removing architectural barriers, improving safety conditions in pedestrian crossings, providing the space with parking spaces for people with reduced mobility, street furniture, lighting and creating recharging points for electric vehicles.
Completed work
These works are added to another action already completed, the installation of a totem, lecterns and informative and interpretive panels in this tourist area of Santiago del Teide, a project for which Turismo de Canarias allocated 150,000 euros. It is an initiative described as innovative with which the City Council includes the beach in the Network of Smart Destinations. It makes it possible to take advantage of new technologies to improve the quality of the information offered at the destination and to participate in the creation of a better urban space, while at the same time promoting socioeconomic and tourist activity in the area.
In Los Gigantes, the authorities announced that they are about to be put out to tender and to begin a series of actions to adapt and improve several roads of the Los Gigantes Cliff, including the streets of Adelfas and Tamara. The project contemplates rehabilitating urban facilities and improving accessibility conditions, with resurfacing work, burying facilities and providing new urban furniture and vegetation, as well as changing the lighting. Its execution requires 1.3 million.
The delegation visited the finished work of the Buganvilla square, where they remodeled the Tulipán, Tarajal and Jacaranda passages and the interior of the passage that connects José González Forte Avenue with the La Mimosa passage. The works, financed with a grant of 200,000 euros, complete the remodeling project of the Plaza Buganvilla carried out in 2015.
