The Municipality of Puerto de la Cruz rejects that the victims of gender violence in the tourist city have to travel to the courts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to be served. PP, PSOE, ACP and CC agree to oppose the agreement of the Permanent Commission of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), on March 31, which has proposed to the Ministry of Justice that cases of violence against women in this municipality are processed from now on 38 kilometers away, in the Palace of Justice in the capital of Tenerife.
The PP has publicly shown its “categorical opposition” to the fact that “issues related to violence against women that occurred or with victims residing in Cross port be known for the Courts of Violence against Women of Santa Cruz de Tenerife». A transfer that they consider “goes totally against the interests of citizens and, especially, of women victims of violence, since it seems evident that those who must travel to Santa Cruz to be there first thing in the morning will be harmed, having to endure, not only the enormous retentions of the TF-5, but also, in many cases, they will have to find ways to travel to those courts. That, furthermore, they are not characterized by having the best means for the victims, and they will be absolutely overloaded with work, since it is also proposed that they take on matters of the judicial districts of La Laguna and Güímar».
From the PP it is affirmed that this measure, «instead of helping to reduce the psychological condition, it will mean a greater burden that will be imposed on those who already have serious difficulties in denouncing. This would mean worsening the double victimization or secondary victimization, since it is not only the problem of displacement, but it would distance the victims from those institutions that could provide them with support, such as the Municipal Social Services or even the police.
The popular ones believe that this decision will go against the interests of the affected women
The PP has formulated a proposal for the Porto City Council to urge the CGPJ to reconsider its position and communicate its firm opposition to this measure to the Ministry of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands and the Government of the Canary Islands. He also recalls that “it has not been taken into account that the Judicial District of La Orotava has a specialized court which, although it does not have exclusive jurisdiction, does have jurisdiction to deal with victims of violence against women from San Juan de La Rambla to La Matanza, so it does not seem reasonable or consistent that from Cross portinstead of being attended to in La Orotava, have to travel to Santa Cruz of Tenerife».
The Government of Porto (PSOE-ACP), pointed out Thursday, April 21, 2022 to EL DÍA that there is an agreement with the PP so that this matter is taken to the next plenary session as an institutional motion, also with the support of CC. In his opinion, “it is essential to take into account the island’s insularity, as well as the territorial and geographical characteristics and the scarcity and deficiencies of the island’s public transport network, which make it impossible to equate Tenerife and the distances between the North and the capital with other territories». It is also rejected that the interpretation of the CGPJ in the aforementioned agreement when it states that “moving the victim away from the place where the events were committed can help reduce the psychological condition.” PSOE and ACP They warn that “removing the victim from their environment, from the social, family and professional support networks, and moving them to an unknown and crowded environment, will not contribute to reducing this condition, but could be counterproductive because it supposes a important emotional, economic and time cost. Difficulties to reconcile that, in many cases, will lead the victims to withdraw their complaints or continue with legal actions.
