SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Councilor for Youth and Education of the City Council of La Laguna, José Juan Gavilán, attended this Saturday the presentation of the Guagua Saludable, a project promoted from his area, in collaboration with La Granja de Ideas, to promote local fruit consumption and vegetables from childhood.
During the day, held in the church square of San Juan Bautista, a British two-story bus hosted various free activities aimed at the whole family, during which the girls and boys were able to prepare their own dishes and juices.
“We continue to see that obesity in the Canary Islands is a risk factor and, for this reason, we must continue to make minors aware of the need to have healthy eating habits. It is very important to introduce fruit and vegetables into our diet and, the sooner it is done, the better”, pointed out the mayor.
Accompanied by the Councilor for Social Welfare, Rubens Ascanio, José Juan Gavilán encouraged families to participate in the activities that this bus will take through the six districts, with its first stop in the town center and which will continue its route until May 7 . José Juan Gavilán added that the goal is “to reach as many areas as possible” and recalled that interested people can consult the itinerary on the Education and Youth social networks.
The first deputy mayor and mayor of Social Welfare expressed himself in similar terms. “From the area we are supporting this project because we want to continue fulfilling one of the objectives that we have set for ourselves since the beginning of our mandate, which is to become a healthy municipality, and this initiative fits perfectly into this model,” said Rubens Ascanio. .
To encourage participation, he specified that previous work has been carried out with schools and recalled that the Guagua Saludable will go through “many points in La Laguna”, so “we also demonstrate that there is life beyond the hull”.
This action represents an “opportunity to learn about and promote healthy habits at the table, because in the Canary Islands we have figures on obesity and diseases linked to food problems, such as diabetes, which place us in the worst rankings in the European Union, and from the public administrations we have the duty to work on this type of program”, concluded the councillor.
The Guagua Saludable route started this Saturday in the church square of San Juan Bautista, with activities that, like the rest of the days, will be held between 11:00 and 14:00. It will continue in the plazas of Valle de Guerra (April 9), San Luis Gonzaga de Taco (April 16), Finca España (April 23), Guamasa (April 30) and Las Mercedes (May 7).
In each of the locations, an information totem will be placed two weeks in advance. In addition, to reach the largest possible number of people and guarantee the interest and attention of minors, the activities will be carried out in groups of 30-35 people.
The activities include videos and interactive activities, with electronic devices, playful-educational workshops, magic tricks and actions that allow girls and boys to learn healthy habits that they can apply in their daily lives, cooking and enjoying a healthy diet. , with simple recipes that they will create every Saturday using fruits and vegetables produced in the municipality.
