The general director of Public Health, José Juan Alemán, sees the celebration of Carnivals in the street in June as feasible “even without masks.” Alemán indicated that there is a “very low” probability that between now and then there will be a penetration of a new variant or “a turn” in the epidemiological situation that “puts us in another situation.”
Alemán, who made these statements in Cope Tenerife, when asked if he saw Carnival celebrations on the street in the Canary Islands in June, answered “yes”, that he saw it as possible. In addition, he added that “probably, even without a mask”, although he admitted that at this point he could be “swinging”. Everything will depend on what the epidemiological situation is then, which he believes will be “quite relaxed.”
Likewise, the general director of Public Health indicated that at the moment “it does not touch, it does not correspond”, that in the Canary Islands there are massive celebrations in the street, as has been seen in other parts of the Spanish geography, something that, he admitted, produced “sadness”, since “it is evident that we are in the sixth wave”, in which “the virus continues to circulate at a high level”. Alemán added that he is in favor of gradually removing the restrictive measures.
In this sense, he advanced that the current traffic light alert system will disappear, although it will continue to function internally to detect possible spikes or the penetration of new variants. Likewise, he indicated, finally, that the sixth wave of the pandemic “has broken the information and organization systems” and has put the autonomous communities in “a complicated situation.”
From the City Council of Santa Cruz these statements were valued yesterday, which they understand come to endorse their decision to move the Carnival to the month of June. “We succeeded in moving the June Carnival, it is something that comes to reaffirm our decision to delay its celebration, always depending on the evolution of the pandemic since it would allow us to recover the street”, pointed out the Councilor for Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello.
For the mayor, the street carnival in June “will be the turning point of the economic recovery. De facto we would be the first Carnival in the street, because, although there are places where Carnivals are being celebrated, they are all doing it without a street. The first to consider it is Santa Cruz”.
The acts on the Santa Cruz road would start with a surprise that will be revealed on the night of June 23, the night of San Juan, in which you could choose to burn the sardine, coinciding with the bonfires. On Friday, June 24, the Carnival will once again take to the streets with the Annunciator Cavalcade, which will give way to the different nightly dances enlivened by Canarian orchestras. On Saturday, June 25, the Day Carnival will be held, which will give way to the second night of dancing in the street. On Sunday 26, in addition to another day of Carnival Day, the Rhythm and Harmony contest will take place.
