A representation of mothers and fathers of students from the Center for Early Childhood and Primary Education (CEIP) Punta Larga, in Candelaria, will meet on Tuesday before him Parliament of the Canary Islands to demand that the school canteen service not be privatized from this public school starting next year. They consider such a measure inadmissible when the canarian government is currently building a new dining room with a kitchen.
This group has been fighting for almost a year against this privatization that will lead to “a rise in fees” for each child user of the service and the deterioration of food quality compared to the current one, since it is supplied by a catering service. “All private companies are going to make their contracts profitable,” they maintain.
Before 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a group of mothers and fathers from the CEIP Punta Larga will demand from the regional deputies “that what was agreed by the plenary session of the Candelaria City Council be respected”, which is committed to direct management and a school eco-dining room, with local products, “a sure bet for improving food quality”. They want them to apply the Proposal No Law (PNL) on the direct management of school cafeterias, approved in the regional Chamber on July 18 and 19, 2017.
So far, the attempts with the Canarian Government so that the Ministry of Education is listening have been unsuccessful. mothers and fathers have requested a meeting with the counselor “to explain the current situation with the center’s school cafeteria and with the existing concern about its privatization”, but they have not received a response.
The decision to privatize the CEIP Punta Larga school canteen service was adopted by the previous School Council on April 29, 2021. They clarify that they are not acting against the School Center or the Ministry of Education, they only want a qualitative improvement in the quality of education through the feeding of students. This was reported to the deputy of the Common, Rafael Yanes, in a meeting held last January with information, documents, photographs and complaints about the quality and quantity of the menus served in this educational center, as well as the complaints filed in the same. The Common Deputy initiated the investigation and the necessary consultation process.
With the concentration scheduled for the day after tomorrow before the Parliament of the Canary Islands, this group of mothers and fathers “wants to influence the need to implement what was approved by the political class, which would mean an improvement in the quality of the CEIP Punta Larga school canteen ».
