The groups that make up the local government of La Laguna (PSOE, United You Can and Avante) will present, to today’s plenary session, a motion in which they will request the agreement to “roundly and forcefully condemn the statements of Bishop Bernardo Álvarez, produced in the media on January 19, in which he referred to homosexuality in a pejorative and demeaning manner, and ratify the firm and determined commitment of this City Council with the right of all people to their sexual orientation and gender identity. As well as “condemning any form of LGTBIphobia and hate speech that promotes, directly and indirectly, violence and discrimination against LGTBI people.” And, lastly, “transfer this agreement to the Bishopric of Tenerife, the Spanish Episcopal Conference and the island’s town halls”.
Campaign against LGBTIphobia
On the other hand, the City Council presented yesterday a campaign called Here we do not allow forceful LGTBIphobia, which will run until next April in different municipal spaces and media, especially in the sports field. To this end, the areas of Equality, LGTBI, Quality of Life and the Autonomous Sports Organization have developed a series of actions that will begin on the 19th, coinciding with the Day Against LGTBIphobia in Sport. “We show an absolute rejection of LGTBI hate attacks in sports and we say, loudly, that in La Laguna we are not going to allow it,” said the councilor for the area, Idaira Afonso.
