The Teatro Leal de La Laguna will host this Monday, December 13, starting at 7:30 p.m., the institutional act on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC), a third-level hospital center with headquarters in the town.
During the event, a recognition will be given to various professionals from the health branch who have developed their work at the center. The event will feature the interventions of the Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, the Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, the Minister of Social Action, Citizen Participation and Diversity of the Council of Tenerife, Marian Franquet, and the director of the Canary Islands Health Service, Conrado Domínguez. The evening will feature a musical performance by the singer Cristina Ramos and the projection of a commemorative video.
In March 2021, the plenary session of the City Council of La Laguna approved an institutional motion to initiate a file of honors and distinctions in favor of the HUC, on the occasion of this anniversary and the work carried out especially in this last year. A motion that included “the innovative nature of this complex of reference in the Islands, which stands out for its kidney transplant program and for its work in cardiac surgery, among other great achievements during its five decades of history.”
The Hospital Universitario de Canarias responds to the health needs of the population in the north of the Island and La Palma. It opened its doors for the first time on July 17, 1971, as a general and clinical hospital of the Cabildo de Tenerife, and currently, with 800 beds and more than 5,600 workers, it depends on the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands. To understand the dimensions of the hospital complex, the institutional motion details such relevant figures as the 23,000 admissions it receives annually, the nearly 400,000 consultations, the 39,000 dialysis sessions and the approximately 18,000 surgeries.
