The Overnight stays in tourist apartments shot up 446.6% in the Canary Islands in October compared to the same month of the previous year and exceed 1.7 million, although they are still far from the 2,270,976 registered in October 2019, before the pandemic.
Of the total, 1,483,839 correspond to residents abroad and 222,505 to national residents.
In addition, the Canary Islands received 251,083 travelers in October with an average stay of 6.70 days, an occupancy of 62.2% and 8,893 people employed personnel.
By tourist area, the island of Tenerife was the preferred destination for tourist apartments, with 593,080 overnight stays in October, and the Barcelona coast had the highest occupancy rate, with 75.6% of the apartments offered.
In addition, the tourist spots with the highest number of overnight stays in October are San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), Arona (Tenerife) and Tías (Lanzarote).
In total, overnight stays in non-hotel establishments in Spain (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 8.2 million in October, three times more than in the same month of 2020, but 6.5% lower than those of the same month of 2019, in the absence of a pandemic.
Overnight stays by travelers resident in Spain reached 3.7 million in October, 45.2% of total overnight stays, while those made by foreigners totaled 4.5 million.
Compared to October 2019, when Covid had not yet broken into the world, extra-hotel overnight stays fell by 6.5% in October this year, despite the fact that overnight stays by Spaniards were above the pre-pandemic level, as it exceeded those registered in October 2019 by 41.3%. This is not the case with foreigners, whose overnight stays were 27.1% lower than those of the same month of 2019.
During the month of October, 142,068 non-hotel accommodations were open in Spain, which represents 81.1% of the total directory of establishments in that month.
In the first ten months of the year, extra-hotel overnight stays have increased by 51.8% compared to the same period in 2020.
By origin of travelers, overnight stays by residents in Spain were 3.7 million, which represents 45.2% of total overnight stays. For their part, those of non-residents reached 4.5 million, which represents 54.8% of total overnight stays.
More than 4 million in apartments
Overnight stays in tourist apartments reached 4.4 million in October, compared to 1.1 million in the same month of 2020. Based on origin, overnight stays by travelers residing in Spain represented 32.6% of the total, while that those of non-resident travelers account for 67.4%.
By communities, the Canary Islands, Andalusia and the Valencian Community were the main destinations for travelers in the month of October, with 1.7 million, 733,069 and 655,844 overnight stays, respectively.
During the first ten months of 2021, the total number of overnight stays grew by 46.1% compared to the same period in 2020.
Almost 60% more is campsites
Overnight stays in campsites reached 2.3 million in October, compared to 1.1 million in the same month of 2020. Based on origin, overnight stays by travelers residing in Spain represented 51.4% of the total, while those of non-resident travelers accounted for 48.6%.
During the first ten months of 2021, total overnight stays in this type of establishment increased by 59.4% compared to the same period in 2020.
In October, 39.1% of the offered plots were occupied. The weekend occupancy rate reached 41.4%. The Valencian Community was the preferred destination for campsites, with 792,874 overnight stays. It also has the highest occupancy rate, 59.9% of the offered pitches.
By tourist area, the Costa Blanca (Alicante) was the preferred destination in October with 400,297 overnight stays. And it also has the highest occupancy rate, with 74.1% of the offered pitches. The tourist spots with the most overnight stays are Benidorm, Mont-Roig del Camp and Sant Pere Pescador.
Regarding rural tourism, overnight stays reached one million in October, compared to 398,249 in the same month of 2020. Based on origin, overnight stays by travelers residing in Spain represent 77.7% of the total, while those of Non-resident travelers account for 22.3%.
During the first ten months of 2021, the number of overnight stays grew by 40.4% compared to the same period in 2020. In rural tourism accommodation, 21.8% of the beds were occupied in October. The weekend occupancy rate stands at 38.1%.
By autonomous communities, Castilla y León was the preferred destination, with 181,309 overnight stays. The Balearic Islands have the highest occupancy rate, with 48.9% of the available places.
By tourist area, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with 107,241 overnight stays. The island of Menorca reached the highest occupancy, with 52% of the available places.
Hostels, meanwhile, reached 388,261 overnight stays in October, compared to 42,517 in the same month of 2020. Based on origin, overnight stays by travelers residing in Spain represent 57.6% of the total, while those of Non-resident travelers account for 42.4%.
During the first ten months of 2021, the total number of overnight stays increased by 79.8% compared to the same period in 2020. In hostels, 20.7% of the places were occupied in October, while the degree of occupancy at the weekend reached 26.4%.
By communities, Galicia was the preferred destination, with 91,900 overnight stays. Comunidad de Madrid reached the highest occupancy, with 33.2% of the available places.
