Thus, during the day on Saturday, they forced the removal of a generator set and a tent with computers and music equipment, which had been installed in violation of the rules of use of the recreational area.

In addition, the party was prevented from spreading to the forest, due to the environmental risk and the degree of protection of the area, and the Unit took minutes on these events, the presence and location of spills in the environment and other security risks detected in buildings that should be closed to the public.

The Department of the Environment and the Fight against Climate Change, on which UPMA depends, believes that all sectors directly or indirectly involved, including students and educational centers, “have to do their part to guarantee a responsible use of the recreational area and avoid damage to this natural space “.

According to the councilor, José Luis Hernández, “we cannot tolerate the Mesa Mota becoming the metropolitan area’s ‘bottle-track’ for faculties and institutes.”

Hernández announced that the UPMA will continue to act in the area to avoid damage to the natural space and guarantee respect for the park’s rules of use, given the deterrent effect that its action had on last Saturday, and that it will continue to work in collaboration with the bodies and security forces and cleaning services.

In addition, he thanked the “predisposition of the ULL to find alternatives and avoid the generalization of attitudes of rejection of youth”, and pointed out that joint proposals will be evaluated, such as cleaning and reforestation actions in the area with the students, to compensate the accumulation of waste and the CO2 footprint that these festivities have entailed.

The Environmental Protection Unit (UPMA) of the municipality is a surveillance and control department created this year and dependent on the Department of the Environment.

At present, it has two assistants of environmental agents who, this year alone, have drawn up more than 30 inspection records for the corresponding administrative or legal procedures and their action has allowed the removal of more than 225 tons of spills in various points of the municipality, in many cases, by those responsible for the offense.

Also, the Department is already working to increase the resources and staff of a Unit that “is doing a fantastic job, with a highly motivated team committed to natural and rural areas.”

Preservation and sustainable use

The UPMA has among its objectives the preservation and sustainable use of the environment throughout the municipality, through control, dissuasive actions and monitoring of discharges in rural and natural areas; environmental education and awareness; the detection of invasive species of flora and fauna; the control of illegal hunting and fishing or any other activity that may be detrimental to the natural environment, all in cooperation with Seprona and the municipal Ecological Police.
