Election Gala of the Carnival Queen of Santa Cruz 2020. Sergio Méndez

The Autonomous Organization of Festivities and Recreational Activities (Oafar) of Santa Cruz approved yesterday, unanimously, the creation of a working table with the aim that the Carnival Galas 2023 are inclusive, or what is the same, that those who compete in them they can be both men and women. This was explained by the area councilor, Alfonso Cabello, at the end of the Oafar Governing Council held yesterday. “The Governing Council approved the convocation of the three Queen’s Election Galas for next year, and at the same point on the agenda, an agreement was adopted so that the celebration of the following year, 2023, at least in the children’s section , a more inclusive Gala is achieved, an agreement that does not cover the Carnival of 2022 because the procedures are very advanced ”.

According to the mayor of Fiestas, what is intended with this work table is to find a way to make this full inclusion effective. “What is rewarded in the contest – he continued – is not the candidate, but the costume, the attitude, the presentation, not that she is pretty, for example; that is not a variable that is taken into account. For this reason, in the end, what has to be seen is what kind of call would be made for the sake of that inclusion, it is a Gala for Queen, Reigning, see what we call it ”.

In this working group the opposition political parties, designers, as well as the Equality area of the City Council will be represented. “Talking about gender or felt sex should not be a variable when choosing a winner. We have to focus on the celebration itself ”, added the mayor. Cabello admitted that it is a complex matter because even the designs, which until now are obviously feminine, can change to another type of fantasy. In any case, “I think that this is something the Carnival has overcome, because on some occasion a candidate has appeared who on her DNI was a man, and it has not posed any kind of problem.”

In addition to this agreement, the Governing Council approved the tender for seven framework contracts, including those for chairs, scenography, security or cleaning. “The City Council is working so that the legal and administrative possibilities are given to celebrate the Carnival and that only the doubt remains of the evolution of the pandemic”, defended Cabello. “In three weeks we have held two governing councils and we have carried out 17 tenders, which is a very high number,” he added.

With respect to the bases of the Galas, three modifications have been introduced. The first is the one that has to do with the public vote, which is entered for the first time, and will account for 15% of the final grade that the designs reach. The second change is that the amount of the winners’ prizes has been increased. And the last of the modifications is that it is mandatory to attend the dress rehearsal.

The contest rules will be displayed on the bulletin board of the municipal electronic headquarters, as well as on the website carnavaldetenerife.com.

Any person, artists or designers, individually or as a team, may participate in the contest. Each contestant may only present a single work with its corresponding motto or title. The winner will obtain a prize of 2,500 euros and the ownership of the work will go exclusively to Fiestas.
