The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife asks to reinforce COVID controls in airports and hotels in the face of the increase in infections

More health checks at airports and hotels. The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, has asked this Friday that new measures to control the coronavirus be taken in light of the situation in the main tourist-issuing markets of the archipelago (United Kingdom and Germany). Speaking to the Ser string, Martín has admitted that he “worries” the high rate of infections in the Canary Islands that is combined with a low vaccination of the population and the appearance of a new variant, for which he appealed to be “vigilant” in the face of the evolution of the pandemic, always “so changeable”.

This Thursday, the Ministry of Health and the Regional Government Area Council reported that the Archipelago is the community that has reported the most cases of COVID-19 imported from another country in the last seven days, with 77, a figure equivalent to the 8% of all those diagnosed on the islands in that period (967), according to the latest Health data.

Pedro Martín has said that they are in “full debate” with the Government of the Canary Islands to establish measures, specifically, to strengthen health controls at airports and hotels, which, according to the leader, there is “a good experience” of them previously.

However, Martín has pointed out that now the moment is “very different” because vaccination in the islands is “quite high”, but he understands that new measures must be taken that are even supported by hoteliers and agents of the tourism subsector to avoid that “this it can get out of hand. ”

Likewise, it has shown its hope that the new measures will not be appealed before the courts of justice. “That we are all aware of what we are at stake,” he added.

COVID incidence increases

Fuerteventura has risen this Thursday to level 2 of health alert after worsening its incidence in recent days. The island fell on October 14 from level 2 to 1, so it has not been able to stay at the minimum level for a month. Although the rest of the islands remain at the same level for another week, they are also experiencing a negative evolution of the pandemic since mid-October. The Government of the Canary Islands indicates that the new measures will be applied on the island from 00:00 on Monday, November 15.

In the whole of the territory of the Autonomous Community, between November 3 and 9, 912 new cases of covid-19 were reported, which represents an increase of around 64.3% in the daily average of new cases in relation to the previous week, in which 555 cases were registered.
