The Red Cross in the Canary Islands has launched the psychological support service ‘Red Cross Listen to You La Palma’ to meet the needs for psychological care or emotional support of people who are affected by the volcano, for different reasons, such as because they have They have been evicted from their homes, have lost their homes, land, crops and / or jobs, or are afraid and uncertain about what may happen, among other things.

People who require this assistance can call 900 107 917, where a voice-over will appear that allows you to press the number 1 if the call has to do with the emergency on La Palma. The call is confidential and free, with attention from Monday to Thursday from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00, and Friday morning.

‘Red Cross Listen to You La Palma’ is attended by staff and, mainly, volunteers from the Institution, with training and experience in psychosocial support and accompaniment.

This service has three levels of care according to the needs of the people served. At level 1, psychosocial care is offered for emotional distress, at level 2 (more specialized) there is a referral to specific and more continuous psychological assistance (attended by psychology professionals), and at level 3 there is a referral to a emotional accompaniment (attended by trained accompaniment volunteers).

As explained by the provincial director of the Red Cross Health Area in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Ramón Rivero, “with this service ‘Red Cross Listen to You La Palma’ we try to provide active listening with the aim of alleviating, as far as possible, the discomfort and suffering of the people affected, and in many cases, a follow-up is carried out to find out how the person is doing and how their situation is evolving “.
