‘The memory of an event’ takes us back to 1797, when the capital repelled Horacio Nelson’s attack. And it is that for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the popularly known as ‘Gesta del 25 de Julio’ has been one of the events of greatest historical significance, with enormous social significance that affects all the Canary Islands. That frustrated and victorious meeting between the English and Tenerife, respectively, has been written, spoken and continues to be held at dawn on July 25, 1797.
Once again, the curtain on the theater of the Circle of Friendship XII of January rises to stage that event as it has been doing in recent years, but this time it takes on a greater meaning, since the Theater Group opens with the name of ‘La Amistad’, which belongs to the aforementioned Circle of Friendship, and, above all, because It is the first time that the aforementioned cultural society offers its own show, away from the entire historical and epistemic apparatus, transforming it into an intimate and familiar scene, as a simple and poetic invitation to recognize and value each of the sequences of that event. because Santa Cruz, with General Gutiérrez at the head, defeated the most famous sailor of one of the military powers of Europe, Horacio Nelson.
In a house today -any house in Santa Cruz-, the staging of the fight takes place. The grandchildren, under the direction of the grandfather, prepare the action. The living room becomes a theater, with its stalls, the boxes, the stalls and, of course, the audience made up of the whole family: the theater within the theater. Through play, through the fun of summer days, the children turn the entire house into a rough sea, into a castle of San Cristóbal, into water carriers and soldiers. In the end, they, and all of us, have not only learned, but also celebrated.
