The opposition groups Assembly for La Orotava and the PSOE blame the CC government for the closure of the Irene González Astrophysical infant school, located in Candelaria del Lomo and the only municipal school, due to the expiration of November 8 contract with Mensajeros de la Paz, the NGO that manages the resource and the City Council has not yet issued a new tender.
A situation that according to the spokesperson for the Assembly, Aida Salazar, “could be seen to come from last year after the closure of the Elisa González de Chávez nursery, located in El Mayorazgo and nothing has been done despite the fact that we asked several times about this matter in the commissions ”.
Salazar defends the public management of basic social services and argues that this “is part of the political will, which in this case is non-existent.”
In similar terms, the PSOE, the main opposition group, pronounces itself, which considers nursery schools as an “essential service that must be provided with total and absolute guarantees” and therefore, argues that the City Council must have greater political involvement in its maintenance and quality. “The problems that we now find ourselves with are the result of the abandonment of functions to which CC has accustomed us, much more with a sector of the population as sensitive as children and families,” emphasize the socialists.
They also qualify as a “patch” the short-term proposal that the Government has given to the families, such as taking the El Mayorazgo nursery service out to tender in a shorter period of time than was initially considered and derive there to those who had their place in Candelaria del Lomo since the amount of the fee and the aid are the same.
“We understand that this solution does not address the problem in the short, medium and long term, nor does it offer a solution to the many families that depend on a public service to reconcile work and family life. La Orotava needs the start-up of the two nursery schools and that both provide a quality public service at prices that families can afford ”, conclude the Socialists.
