18M Protest in the Canary Islands: Timeline, Highlights, and Responses
Under the slogan “Canary Islands have a limit,” the Canaries will take to the streets on 18 May, aiming to garner the widespread backing witnessed in April of the previous year.

The union criticizes the “suicidal economic model” imposed on the islands, which it says is based on “selling off” the land and the “plundering and destruction” of the coasts and ecosystems, along with the “accelerated loss of the identity of the Canary people and nation.”

In a statement, the union explains that “this brutal plundering is propped up by the theft of capital generated by tourism, which is either taken out of the islands or hoarded by the greedy tourism industry, leaving crumbs for the Canarian population in the form of poverty wages and precarious jobs.”

Intersindical Canaria also points out that this economic model affects housing and rental access, noting that the archipelago “surpassed its ecological and sustainable population capacity a long time ago,” which could lead to Canarians becoming a “minority” as the non-local population continues to grow.
