The Sports Department of the Santa Cruz City Council, headed by Alicia Cebrián (PP), has been working for some time so that the capital does not lose the only access point to the sea for the practice of nautical sports, which was provided by the Insular Center Maritime Sports (Cidemat) and which has been closed for two years due to the poor condition of the structure. As confirmed by the councilor herself, several points are being considered. “The beach of Las Teresitas; the Valleseco coal ships, which have their own dock, or the fishing dock ”, he pointed out.

The Añaza area is not ruled out either, as it also has its own dock, a fundamental structure to facilitate entry into the water. Cebrián recalled that “right now the only place to practice this type of sports in Santa Cruz is the Nautical Club, a private space.”

The mayor pointed out these possibilities in the presentation of the budgets of her area for 2022. Sports will have 5.4 million euros, which represents an increase of 7% compared to what is in force. “The objective is to reactivate the service itself and reactivate the sport of the city,” he added.

The most outstanding are the three major contracts that will be improved in 2022. The first, maintenance, will be awarded in January, so that, for the first time, sports facilities will have a single contract of this type, which will have an amount of 400,000 euros.

Added to this is the improvement of more than 150,000 euros, up to 450,000, of the amount allocated to cleaning sports areas, as well as the 200,000 euros that will be used to hire auxiliary personnel to be in charge of opening and closing the centers.

One of the projects included in the current budget is a sports area on the Las Teresitas sand, a space that will become a reality this January. “Costas has just given us authorization to occupy the space next to the Red Cross booth, and the company in charge is starting to adapt it right now,” Cebrián explained. The councilor refers to an area in which poles will be installed so that nets can be placed, carried by users, and play games of different sports, all on the sand. For activities in the water, authorization has also been requested. The beach of the Maritime Park would be another point likely to host these sports.
