SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 26 Jan (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory for the Spanish Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, has been re-elected this Sunday as the general secretary of the PSOE in the Canary Islands during the closing ceremony of the XV Regional Congress of the Canarian PSOE, held at the Magma Artes & Congresos in the municipality of Adeje, Tenerife.

On 5 December 2024, Torres submitted his candidacy for re-election as the general secretary of the PSOE in the Canary Islands, within the designated timeframe outlined in the agenda for this XV Regional Congress of the Canarian Socialists, as reported at the time by the socialist party in a press release.

Since he was the only candidate registered, and following the verification and validation of the endorsements presented, socialist regulations indicate that no vote should be initiated prior to his proclamation.

He assumed the role in July 2017, at the 13th Congress of the PSOE Canarias held in Vecindario, and was re-elected for the first time in November 2021, at the 14th Congress that took place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Since last November, after serving as President of the Government of the Canary Islands during the 2019-23 term, Torres has combined his organisational duties with his ministerial role in the Spanish Government, overseeing the portfolios of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory.

The event commenced with the sound of ‘Start Me Up’ by The Rolling Stones, as Ángel Víctor Torres and Pedro Sánchez entered the Congress Palace to a warm reception from the Tenerife socialists.

At the start of the closing ceremony, the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, also a socialist, took the floor to express her support and promote this “for all,” looking ahead to the upcoming elections in 2027, as well as addressing “day-to-day” matters in the Canary Islands.

The new Executive Commission was approved in this session on Sunday, wherein the presidency of the party remains in the hands of José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and the Secretary of Organisation, Nira Fierro, receiving support from 78% of attendees.
