The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, accompanied by the Councillor for Social Welfare, María Cruz, and the president, the CEO, and the manager of the Municipal Society of Housing and Services (Muvisa), Adolfo Cordobés, Domingo Galván, and Emilio Fariña, respectively, today toured the facilities of the Municipal Office for the Elderly. This new resource aims to centralise not merely the advice, management of activities, and support for the 36 associations of older citizens in the locality, but it will also provide an individualised service to bring all available resources and services closer to those over 60 years of age in La Laguna.

Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasised that “this Office will enable us to continue enhancing municipal policies aimed at this significant group of individuals in La Laguna, which comprises nearly a quarter of the local populace, and to offer them essential face-to-face care so that they can access all the resources and services available to them, especially given the challenges that the current digital model presents to many older individuals.”

María Cruz detailed that, with this service, “we aim to boost the participation, integration, and self-realisation of older adults in person, while addressing the prevention of isolation and unwanted loneliness, and reinforcing collaboration with the extensive associative movement and community of La Laguna.”

On his part, Domingo Galván remarked that “the Municipal Office for the Elderly will offer personalised attention to the associations and the La Laguna community who seek direct and reliable information about municipal services, regarding all the programmes provided for the elderly by various entities and organisations, along with the initiatives developed by Muvisa, as the local Administration’s own means for facilitating revitalisation, recreation, and healthy ageing services.”

Location and Hours

This new Office is situated at the Muvisa headquarters in Plaza de la Junta Supremo and operates from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. The space will be overseen by a coordinator, one individual responsible for dynamisation, and another for administration, thereby facilitating enhanced planning and improvement of municipal services for older citizens.

Some of the services provided will include advice on matters pertaining to the elderly community, revitalisation programmes, and the battle against unwanted loneliness, both individually and collectively, as well as support and monitoring of various requests made through the different records.

Furthermore, it will collaborate and strengthen the Elderly Area of the La Laguna City Council, offering advisory, management, and support services to municipal entities working with this community, with special emphasis on neighbourhood associations for the elderly. Indeed, it will assist with any management or procedures they require, both sociocultural and administrative in nature, and in obtaining and processing documentation for subsidies, transport services, or utilisation of spaces.

Additionally, this Office will centralise local initiatives regarding the organisation and management of sociocultural revitalisation activities, crafting new proposals to foster active ageing, healthy living, leisure, and free time through innovative approaches, as well as intergenerational and equality programmes, along with management of events related to the elderly community.
