SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Jan. 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife has raised waste collection at clean points by 13.1% in 2024 when compared to 2023, with the eight operational clean points processing 62,683 tonnes last year, which is 7,277 tonnes more than the previous year.

Consequently, there was a rise in users due to the enhancements made to facilities and extended operating hours, as 326,734 individuals recycled their materials in 2024, compared to 280,208 in 2023, marking an increase of 16.6%.

The Minister for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, elaborated in a statement that an “endeavour” is being made to streamline collection at the clean points. Extensions to collection hours have been introduced alongside outreach and educational campaigns aimed at the public.

In this context, Pérez emphasised that “clean points are free and play a vital role in the effective management of domestic waste.”

By separating waste correctly, she remarked, “we facilitate their recycling and reuse, thereby closing the materials’ lifecycle and preventing environmental pollution.”

Furthermore, the island’s waste director, Alejandro Molowny, indicated that improvement works are underway at the clean points situated in Jagua (Santa Cruz), Taco (La Laguna), Güímar, Adeje and Buenavista, in addition to the modernisation of transfer facilities.

“Moreover, we are focused on establishing another eight clean points, located in Arico, Los Rodeos (La Laguna), Fasnia, Granadilla, San Miguel, Vilaflor, Guía de Isora and Tegueste. Some of these are expected to be completed in the first half of the year, while others will commence in the latter half. Our objective is to complete the network with a total of 16 clean points,” he stated.

At present, there are eight clean points operational on the island of Tenerife, located in Jagua (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), Torres de Taco, Güímar, Adeje, Buenavista del Norte, La Guancha, La Orotava and Arona.

These facilities are operational on Mondays from 08:00 to 16:00; from Tuesday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00; on Saturdays from 09:00 to 20:00; and on Sundays from 09:00 to 14:00.

The collection of waste at mini clean points in 2024 also saw an increase, rising from 59,116 kilos to 79,757 kilos, which equates to a 35% rise.

Currently, there are 10 mini clean points active on the island, with plans to add three more units in 2025.

Mini clean points are waste collection areas designed for individuals (not for professionals or businesses), featuring collection facilities for waste including household oil, small electrical and electronic devices, paints, footwear, solvents, wood, metals, paper and cardboard, batteries, paints, clothing, x-rays, inks, and toner.

The capacity of the containers ranges from 10 to 400 kilos or litres, depending on the type of waste being processed.
