SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 7th January (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Tenerife have signed an agreement this Tuesday aimed at facilitating the construction of 257 protected residences on the island.
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, emphasised that this document is “crucial for providing better service to those individuals in need of a decent home at affordable prices.”
Clavijo, who was present at the signing alongside the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, the Director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Icavi), Antonio Ortega, the Vice President of the insular institution, Lope Afonso, and the councilor of the area, Sonia Hernández, pointed out that this agreement aims to enhance the availability of properties under the social rental scheme “and is a result of the efforts” that have been undertaken since the beginning of this Legislature to realise the Housing Plan of the Canary Islands 2020-2025.
During the ceremony, he underscored the significance of this collaboration in addressing the most pressing housing needs on the island.
“This agreement represents a decisive step in the commitment of this Government to ensure that all residents of the Canary Islands have access to decent and affordable housing. Through the construction of 257 new protected homes, we are providing a concrete response to this vital demand, alongside island entities, which must be integral to the solutions that affect their citizens, regardless of jurisdiction,” he asserted.
In this regard, he stated, “we will continue to endorse collaboration between administrations; it is the key instrument for developing genuine and effective solutions, and I am confident that this agreement will facilitate progress in construction in the areas with the highest demand for housing, ensuring that resources reach those most in need.”
On her part, Rosa Dávila termed this signature as “a historic milestone” for the island, as taking responsibility for housing “is not only a significant advance in our capability for action but also a demonstration of accountability in face of one of the gravest challenges we confront as a society.”
The construction of these residences will mitigate pressure on the real estate market and enhance the quality of life for the most vulnerable families, “and the political and technical leaders of the Cabildo have invested considerable effort to achieve this, making a noteworthy economic contribution to enable this to materialise today,” the island president highlighted.
The agreement between the Government of the Canary Islands, represented by the Canary Islands Housing Institute, and the Cabildo of Tenerife, aims to enlarge the public housing stock on the island, involving a financial effort amounting to 45 million euros, co-financed at 57.11% by Icavi and 42.89% by the Tenerife Cabildo, according to a statement from the Executive.
THE COUNCIL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MANAGING THE PROCESS
In total, it outlines the construction of 257 protected residences, distributed between Santiago del Teide and El Sauzal, each with 17 homes; Granadilla de Abona (Cuevas Cho Portada), with 47; Güímar (La Cruces), with 30; Los Realejos, with 27; San Miguel de Abona, with 90; and El Rosario, with 29.
These locations have been chosen based on areas with the greatest demand for housing on the island.
The agreement assigns the Cabildo comprehensive management of the projects, covering everything from tendering and contracting to execution and oversight, while Icavi provides the necessary land and covers part of the expenses related to technical and construction management services.
The homes to be built are specifically designed for the unique social rental scheme, ensuring affordable prices for families facing significant economic challenges.
Once the construction is finalised, the residences will be integrated into the public housing portfolio managed by Icavi, thus helping to alleviate housing pressure in Tenerife.
