SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 6th Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Two cayucos carrying 159 migrants were intercepted in the early hours of Monday in the waters surrounding Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as reported by sources from Maritime Rescue and the Red Cross.

The first vessel was detected shortly before 01:00 a.m., approximately five miles from Los Cristianos following an emergency call to the Maritime Rescue centre.

The Salvamar Alpheratz was dispatched to assist, coordinating the safe arrival of the boat into port, where a total of 69 men of sub-Saharan origin were brought ashore, including four minors.

After the standard medical assessments conducted at the dock by SUC and Red Cross personnel, it was determined that five individuals required transfer to medical facilities due to various health issues.

Regarding the canoe near Gran Canaria, the Civil Guard issued an alert indicating it was located about 15 miles southwest of the island, prompting the deployment of the Guardamar Urania to the area, which executed the rescue around 03:15 hours.

A total of 90 individuals of sub-Saharan origin were aboard the cayuco, comprising 10 women and one minor, who were disembarked at the Arguineguín dock after 8:00 a.m.
