Protests Erupt in Tenerife and Gran Canaria for Fair Hotel Workers’ Wages

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 24 December (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Grassroots Unions, CCOO, Intersindical, USO, and Frente Sindical Obrero de Canarias -UGT has been excluded- have organised two protests this Friday on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria to advocate for an evaluation of salaries within hospitality agreements.

The demonstrations will commence at 5:00 p.m. from the H10 Conquistador Hotel in Playa de Las Américas for Tenerife, and at the same time from the Lopesan Villa del Conde Hotel towards the Faro Maspalomas Hotel in Gran Canaria.

The unions contend that the salary assessment set forth in 2022, during the emergence of the Covid crisis and the onset of conflict in Ukraine, has “altered” following the tourism sector’s record turnover and profits in 2023 and 2024.

Consequently, the unions are urging for a salary review by 2025 in alignment with the revenue and profits accumulated in recent years; a reduction in workload since absenteeism due to temporary disability is “surging”; the establishment of continuous working hours to enhance the balance between work and family life, and the promotion of collective transport by companies.

“We anticipate a robust turnout from the workforce to ensure the protests are a success, filling Playa de las Américas and Maspalomas, compelling employers to engage in negotiations addressing union requests for improved salaries and working conditions for over 160,000 workers in the hospitality sector across the Canary Islands, and prompting the Government of the Canary Islands to mediate in this conflict. If no agreements materialise between employers and unions, mobilisations will persist and could culminate in a call for a General Strike during Easter,” they stated in a joint declaration.
