VALVERDE (EL HIERRO), September 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, stated this Friday that “in the care of unaccompanied migrant minors it is urgent to stop talking about interterritorial solidarity and demand co-responsibility.”
Delgado has seen first-hand the first-hand accommodation resources on the island to care for unaccompanied migrant minors and the Valverde residence currently houses 113 minors.
El Hierro has a total of 200 places for the care of minors thanks to an agreement with the Frontera City Council, which has allowed 60 places to be added to the 140 that had already been enabled, clarified the head of the Social Welfare area, who clarified that Minors who arrive in El Hierro are being referred to other islands “to prevent all the places from being filled.”
In fact, in recent months, 291 unaccompanied minors have been referred.
In this regard, the counselor regretted that the El Hierro Cabildo has not given up the Nature Classroom, as requested by her department, but, she indicated, “we continue to expand places on other islands to be able to transfer minors if necessary.”
For this reason, it has called on all administrations and autonomous communities to take on the reception of unaccompanied migrant minors who arrive in El Hierro, the Canary Islands and Europe.
“Interterritorial solidarity is not working. It is urgent that we must stop talking about solidarity and talk about co-responsibility, the Canary Islands cannot take on the migration problem alone. It is a State issue and we demand that legislation be passed on this matter. It is not sustainable that Let’s continue assuming full responsibility,” he commented.
Delgado also recalled that the Canary Islands are the southern border of the European Union and “when a minor arrives in El Hierro or Tenerife, arrives in Europe, the community institutions and the central government have to understand it and address this situation now.”
