SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 8 December (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has once again summoned the meeting of the Canary Islands Migration Pact this Monday at 4:00 p.m. This follows the unsuccessful gathering with the central Government, the PP, and the autonomous city of Ceuta last Thursday, which aimed to discuss reforms to the immigration legislation.

The summit, which will be led by Clavijo alongside the Minister of Social Welfare, Candelaria Delgado, is set to commence at 4:00 p.m. at the Presidency headquarters on the island of Tenerife, involving the seven parliamentary groups –CC, PP, PSOE, NC-BC, Vox, ASG, and AHI–.

Subsequently, at 5:00 p.m., heads of the island councils, the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), and representatives from third sector organisations will join the discussion to assess the immigration situation and the ongoing negotiations at the State level. They will also focus on establishing the Canary Islands’ stance for the Conference of Presidents scheduled for 13 December in Santander.

The Canary Islands Migration Pact was called following the unsuccessful meeting that took place in Madrid, wherein the discrepancies between the central government and the PP regarding the mandatory distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors were confirmed.

The popular party continues to advocate for several measures, including the deployment of Frontex in the waters surrounding the archipelago, the request for additional funds from the EU, the relocations to member nations, and ensuring financing for the host autonomous communities.

They also remind the central government of the migration pact that was agreed upon a few months ago by the party leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, which also involved the communities governed by the popular party.
