Santa Cruz de Tenerife Council Fires Civil Protection Chief Following Imprisonment

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 19 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Councillor for Security and Emergencies of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, Gladis de León, formalised a decree this Tuesday that enacts the removal of Santiago Carlos Martín as a volunteer from the municipal Civil Protection unit and concurrently ends his role as the head of said volunteer group – from which he had been temporarily suspended -.

While respecting the presumption of innocence for the accused, this decision at the municipal level is predicated on the recent decree for imprisonment of the individual who previously led the group, alongside various violations identified concerning local ordinances and regional regulations overseeing the operations of these Civil Protection groups.

Additionally, this municipal resolution has taken into account the damage inflicted on the reputation of the capital’s volunteer unit, “whose members do not deserve this,” and to whom the councillor has already extended her full support to persist in the vital work they undertake daily, as stated in a notice from the City Council.

Furthermore, given the nature of the accusations against him – aiding clandestine immigration and sexual assault and harassment – the Department deems it necessary to dismiss the individual who was leading the group from the ongoing and crucial responsibilities carried out by volunteers for the citizens of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Consequently, the decree stipulates that the current deputy head of the group, José Ramón de León González, a volunteer with over 15 years of service, will temporarily take over the management.

The Santa Cruz council also calls for the procedural and personal circumstance of the former head of the Civil Protection volunteer group to be dissociated from the accomplishments and “positive reputation” of the group.
