SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 29 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Secretary of Organisation of the Canary Coalition, David Toledo, regarded this Tuesday as “positive news” that the forthcoming Conference of Presidents will address the migration crisis affecting the islands, following a request from the Government of the Canary Islands led by Fernando Clavijo.

“This is a significant step that should facilitate the reaching of agreements,” stated Toledo, who urged both the Socialist Party and the Popular Party to “avoid turning it into a conflict.”

The nationalist figure acknowledged this as “a fresh opportunity to establish the groundwork for a comprehensive State pact” and insisted that socialists and popular figures “focus on the plight of the over 5,000 children still waiting in overcrowded centres in the Canary Islands for assistance and cast aside their partisan agendas for good.”

Additionally, the second-in-command of the Canarian nationalists demanded from the Government of Pedro Sánchez “greater urgency” in conveying the committed funds related to migration to the Autonomous Community.

In this context, he noted that “undoubtedly, the increase to 100 million euros that the State could allocate to resolve the immigration situation on the islands is encouraging, but it offers no benefit if the funds do not materialise and the Canary Islands are left to shoulder the burdens of migration from Africa alone, as they have until now.”

Toledo also commented on the European aid that the Spanish Government has yet to request to tackle the migration crisis on the islands.

“What is evidently clear is that the narrative from the Government and the socialists diverges sharply from the reality we face,” he remarked.

Furthermore, he cautioned that “the humanitarian crisis on the islands cannot be resolved by mere good intentions.”
