The educational and sports facilities in La Alegría neighbourhood will soon be linked to Residencial Anaga through a groundbreaking pedestrian, cycle-friendly school lane set to open in the capital. These two communities, currently separated by the Tahodio ravine, will be seamlessly connected via a new, improved, and safer pathway.
On the previous Monday, the Municipal Government Board greenlit the development of the project for this forthcoming route, aimed at easing the flow of pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders between La Alegría and Residencial Anaga, along with overseeing the direction and security management of the required construction works. This initiative is scheduled to kick off next year and will receive a European grant exceeding 3.3 million euros.
The primary goal of this project is to enhance the existing pedestrian paths and road safety in the vicinity of the CEIP Miguel Pintor González, the IES Anaga, the CEIP Alfonso Spinola, the local football field, and public transport facilities.
These enhancements are proposed after identifying discontinuities in these routes, where pedestrians are compelled to cross roads frequented by vehicles, encountering obstacles such as rubbish containers and tree pits that hinder the smooth progression of these pathways.
Furthermore, the current pavements are in poor condition, lined with parked cars, and their widths do not ensure accessibility for all users. Additionally, there are walls without railings or with insufficient height as per regulations.
As per the project plan, the aim is for the new pedestrian walkway, passing over the ravine, to be completely interconnected. To achieve this, the area surrounding the football field will be reshaped to evaluate expanding platforms and sidewalk dimensions. Existing obstacles will be reorganized, parking on pedestrian pathways will be prohibited, damaged pavements will be renewed, and speed-reducing measures will be implemented.
The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, emphasised “the necessity for a project in this area that ensures the safety and ease of passage for the community, particularly for young students and athletes.” He also mentioned that “the municipal council is actively developing cycling routes to link most districts and provide continuity to existing ones.”
In addition, the Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, detailed that “this secure pedestrian route will serve as a connection between the three schools in La Alegría and the adjacent football club at Residencial Anaga.” Following the completion of the works, the area will witness improved accessibility, reducing the likelihood of accidents.
Last December, the city council approved the project drafting contract for a sum of 115,877 euros. This initiative forms part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded through European Next Generation funds, with a subsidy of 3,315 million euros.
