Podemos Rejects Migrant Minors’ Referral to Morocco, Criticizes Canarian Government’s Stance

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 16 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Podemos Canarias has expressed its “complete disapproval” regarding the Canarian Government’s proposal to relocate the reception of migrant minors to Morocco.

This action, which “aligns” with the externalisation policies endorsed by the “far-right” Giorgia Meloni in Italy, the party states in a communiqué, is viewed as a “perilous shift that undermines human rights and exploits minors as tools for immigration control.”

The party contends that this approach, also supported by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, through the suggestion of establishing return centres outside the EU, “is merely a tactic to shift the responsibility for managing migration.”

According to Podemos, “outsourcing equates to passing the issue onto third countries that do not invariably ensure adequate protection, thereby jeopardising the welfare of migrant children.”

The party insists that handing over the responsibility of receiving minors to Morocco contravenes the principles of solidarity and protection that ought to govern the immigration policy of any “accountable Government.”

“We cannot permit the usage of migrant minors as test subjects for an inhumane and xenophobic immigration policy,” asserts Podemos, which calls for exploring alternatives that uphold fundamental rights.

The purple party is firmly against a measure they regard as incompatible with the tenets of justice and human rights, advocating for compassionate and responsible solutions to ensure a dignified reception for minors within Spanish territory.

“It is inhumane to utilise children and adolescents as instruments of immigration control. Regardless of the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party’s stance, no solution can supersede fundamental human rights,” emphasises the regional coordinator and national deputy, Noemí Santana.
