SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 11 Oct (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary has reported today that the Canary Islands recorded an average of 67.4 marital breakdowns per 100,000 inhabitants from April to June of this year, the highest rate across the nation. The national average stood at 52.6.

According to the report published today, between April and May 2024, the civil courts of the Archipelago received a total of 1,510 applications for separations, divorces, or marriage annulments, representing a 7.75% increase compared to the second quarter of 2024 (1,402). The regions with the lowest rates of marital breakdown during the analysed period were Castilla-León (44.7), Madrid (46.2), and the Basque Country (47.2).

At the national level, in the second quarter of 2024, the number of applications for marital dissolutions, annulments, separations, and divorces reached 25,727, an increase of 5% compared to the same quarter in 2023.

During last spring, both contested divorce and separation applications marked an increase compared to the previous year. A total of 9,881 contested divorce applications were recorded, representing a year-on-year rise of 6.6 percent.

Additionally, there were 327 contested separations, reflecting a significant increase of 31.3 percent. Applications for consensual divorces, amounting to 14,748, saw a growth of 3.8 percent, whereas consensual separations, numbering 657, decreased by 1.2 percent compared to the second quarter of 2023.

From April to June this year, 14 annulment cases were lodged, up from 13 during the same period in 2023, indicating a rise of 7.7 percent.

Relating the demands for marital dissolution to the population figures as of 1 January 2024, it is observed that the Canary Islands had the highest number of requests per 100,000 inhabitants at 67.4, followed by the Valencian Community and Murcia, both at 59. The lowest figures were noted in Castilla y León (44.7), Community of Madrid (46.2), and Asturias (46.5). The national average reached 52.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is 2.5 points higher than the previous year.

3,696 applications for modification of consensual measures were submitted during this period, representing a rise of 10.9% compared to the second quarter of 2023. The demands for modification of non-consensual measures, totalling 8,936, recorded an annual increase of 8 percent.
