The Sahara’s Joyful Migration: From Tenerife Back to Its Roots

Hindu possesses the gaze of the Sahara reflected in his deep black eyes. Yet, it is also the expression – on a constant smile that brightens everything – of Tenerife, the island where he has spent two months during the summer of 2024 alongside his 37 companions, taking part in a project named Vacations in Peace, which has been thriving for over four decades (since 1979). Beyond those eyes that observe everything, Hindu radiates joy. He appears to be content in his third summer return from the refugee camps in Tindouf. Together with their foster parents, they relish the morning with a visit to the Museum of Science and the Cosmos. This has become a beloved annual event and the last communal experience before their return home next Sunday, September 1. Everything comes to an end, even the joyous moments, but the unforgettable memory of happiness shared between children who possess nearly nothing and supportive residents of Tenerife, whether new or returning participants, who have offered everything to him. Both materially and spiritually.
