The Public Services Councillor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, Carlos Tarife, has devised a strategy to monitor areas in the city where garbage is improperly disposed of.
Tarife has pointed out that there are 28 locations in Santa Cruz where residents are leaving trash on the streets or in flower beds because the recycling containers have been relocated a short distance of only 20-40 meters. In an effort to combat this issue, he plans to personally monitor these areas and engage with residents.
He expressed his concerns on Canarian Television, stating that he will be taking a hands-on approach by interacting with neighbours and reminding them of the importance of keeping the city clean. His initiative, known as the ‘chair campaign’, will kick off next week starting at 5 Luis Celso Guadalupe Avenue in the Añaza neighbourhood, followed by Ofra the next day.
While the City Council has already conducted awareness campaigns, revised regulations, and issued fines for violations, including a recent penalty of 2,000 euros imposed on a restaurant worker for improper waste disposal, Tarife believes more action is necessary to curb such disrespectful behaviours.
He has garnered support for his ‘chair campaign’ through social media and aims to engage the community in improving the neighbourhoods collectively. In a message posted on his profile, he stated, “I am determined to make our city cleaner and will not tolerate the indiscriminate dumping of trash in public areas. Let’s work together to enhance our communities.”
