Tenerife, an island boasting a remarkable array of landscapes and diverse temperatures within a relatively compact area, emerges as a perfect summer destination. An article on the Diario de Avisos highlights this variety, stating that Tenerife offers a wide range of activities and experiences. The article was published on Idealista discussing the top 10 villages in Tenerife.

The stark contrast between the northern and southern parts of Tenerife is truly captivating. The lush green landscapes and humid climate define the north, while the arid and sunnier environment characterises the south. Both ends of the island possess their own allure and are definitely worth exploring for their distinct characteristics.

Beyond the renowned beaches and landscapes, Tenerife boasts 31 municipalities that offer a blend of rich culture and history. Idealista spotlights the following villages:

1. Taganana

Situated in the Anaga Rural Park, Taganana is one of the most charming villages in northern Tenerife. This tranquil location provides breathtaking vistas of cliffs and beaches, trails winding through laurel forests, and the renowned Benijo beach ideal for witnessing enchanting sunsets. Despite its proximity to the capital, the journey by car through mountains takes roughly 40 minutes.

2. Tacoronte

In the north of Tenerife, Tacoronte takes pride in its Tacoronte-Acentejo Wine Route. Here, visitors can explore centuries-old wineries, sample local wines with Designation of Origin, and admire its historic architecture, such as the Iglesia del Cristo and the Convento de San Agustín. It’s only a 20-minute drive from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

3. The Medano

El Médano, located in the south of the island, is a haven for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Apart from offering ideal conditions for water sports, it is home to the historic Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro. A drive from the capital to this vibrant village takes about 45 minutes.

4. Chew

Nestled in a ravine, Masca is perfect for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Its hiking trails lead to secluded beaches, and its history is laden with tales of piracy. The journey from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Masca takes approximately an hour and a half by car.

5. Cross port

Famed for Lago Martiánez, designed by César Manrique, Puerto de la Cruz blends culture and leisure seamlessly. Its festivals, cultural events, and vibrant nightlife make it a must-visit destination. It’s just a 30-minute drive from the capital.

6. The Orotova

Renowned for its historic allure, La Orotava stands out with its cobblestone streets and balconies adorned with flowers. The Casa de los Balcones and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción are must-see attractions. This town also serves as the gateway to the Teide National Park. The journey from Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes around 30 minutes.

7. Saint Christopher of La Laguna

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Laguna is renowned for its colonial residences and vibrant cultural scene. Its festivities and historic structures make it an intriguing destination, just a 15-minute drive from the capital.

8. Icod of the Wines

Famous for the Millenary Dragon Tree and its winemaking heritage, Icod de los Vinos is a haven for wine enthusiasts. Drago Park offers a unique experience with its iconic thousand-year-old tree. The journey from Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes roughly 50 minutes by car.

9. Garachico

Rising from a volcanic eruption in 1706, Garachico has evolved into a tourist hotspot with its natural pools of El Caletón and historic edifices like the Fortaleza de San Miguel. The drive from the capital is about an hour.

10. Candelaria

Situated on the east coast, Candelaria is famed for its Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria and the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias. This town combines history, culture, and breathtaking views, just a 20-minute drive from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Tenerife, with its abundant natural and cultural diversity, offers an unforgettable experience for those seeking to venture beyond its renowned beaches. From the verdant and humid north to the sunny south, every corner of the island promises something distinctive and exceptional.
