On Wednesday, the strike committee of Tenerife Metropolitano unanimously agreed to step up strike actions starting in September, as reported by Comisiones Obreras.

Autumn will bring about the introduction of fresh time schedules impacting peak hours and a revised procession plan, noted the union in a press release.

The workers have opted for these measures due to their belief that thus far the management of Metropolitano de Tenerife has exploited the goodwill and responsibility of the workers. The workers have been gradually reducing the affected time slots of the strikes in an effort to mitigate the impact on this vital public service, the statement said.

In their view, the management has disregarded the mediation role, postponed decision-making, and reneged on “previously established agreements.”

CCOO also stated that the set timetables and planning have been disregarded, staff has been provided with information that lacks credibility, attempts have been made to instigate conflicts between unions, and the legal representation of the workers has been consistently undermined and disavowed, added CCOO.

Throughout this period, the strike committee has confirmed that Eulalia García, the Transport Councillor of Cabildo de Tenerife, “has shown little interest or urgency in resolving the issues affecting Metropolitano de Tenerife’s staff since taking office, which is propelling towards a prolonged conflict with the Management.”

Nevertheless, in a bid to streamline decision-making in July and August and avoid a potentially irreparable escalation in September, the strike committee has extended an olive branch and unanimously decided that only the technical committee, comprised of seven members, will convene.

However, going forward from September, the full committee will assemble, with a preparatory day beforehand for the twelve members.
