The commencement of pilot trials for the new bus lane to Las Teresitas beach will be decided by the residents of San Andrés in collaboration with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council. This initiative, announced by the council, aims to introduce exclusive access for buses on the San Andrés highway (TF-11) between Cueva Bermeja and the bathing area. The primary goal is to alleviate the traffic congestion experienced at this coastal spot, particularly on weekends and throughout the summer months.

Speaking to DIARIO DE AVISOS, Councilor for Mobility Evelyn Alonso disclosed that a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow with the inhabitants of the fishing village to “present the proposal for the commencement of the trials, ideally to be carried out this month.” She further added, “If the proposed dates are feasible for the residents, a collective decision will be made on the initiation of the experimental phase.”

The councilor elaborated, “The Mobility department, in conjunction with the Anaga district, has arranged a community meeting to provide insights on the project and its implications on parking, which will be affected upon implementation. Our objective is to cater to all stakeholders’ interests, and the exact start dates will be finalised accordingly.”

The initiative for a bus lane to Las Teresitas was unveiled by the city council towards the end of the previous month, following discussions with Cabildo, Puertos de Tenerife, and Titsa to establish this dedicated route to the beach. The lane will only be operational during peak times and when a substantial number of beachgoers are anticipated.

The designated bus lane will stretch from the dock roundabout, connecting the San Andrés highway to Las Teresitas. Consequently, parking on San Andrés avenue towards the beach will be abolished, while the frequency of trips on line 910 will be heightened.

The aim is to promote the use of public transport for beach visits. However, preliminary pilot tests will be conducted to gauge potential challenges and benefits associated with the lane’s implementation.

Alonso detailed that the proposal includes a defined and adaptable schedule dependent on weather conditions and beach visitor traffic flow. The lane restrictions will be lifted once delays in bus services are minimal, but parking on Marítima de San Andrés avenue will remain prohibited. “Emergency vehicles may utilise the bus lane when necessary,” emphasized the councilor.

The lane is set to commence at the dock roundabout in the port area, merging with the San Andrés highway (TF-11). The lane will be pre-marked using cones leading up to the San Andrés roundabout in the Cabildo area, where parking spaces along Avenida Marítima de San Andrés will be eliminated.
