The Tenerife Island Council is allocating over five million Euros in scholarships that will benefit more than 6,000 young people on the island. This was approved by the Government Council yesterday, which also agreed on Social Action measures amounting to around ten million Euros for volunteerism and the CAMP La Cuesta. The green light was given to the scholarship call for university studies, Vocational Training, and for students with special educational needs, with a total of 5.7 million Euros. This was announced by the island president, Rosa Dávila, and the vice president, Lope Afonso.

Rosa Dávila explained that this is one of the support measures from the Tenerife Island Council to help families with the expenses related to the education of young people from Tenerife. “The scholarships’ goal is to ease the financial burden while strongly investing in the future. The number of students who could benefit is over 6,000″. The amount could increase to exceed 10 million Euros.”

Initially, four million Euros will fund university studies in three modalities: general (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD); Erasmus program supplement, and transportation grants. Secondly, an investment of 1.2 million Euros is approved to grant scholarships to students with special educational needs, and lastly, 250,000 Euros for Artistic Studies. The application period will open upon the publication in the BOP in July of the regulatory bases and will end on October 31. Dávila appreciated the “timely advance when it was usually expected to be released in October or November”.

The Government Council also approved the agreement between the Tenerife Island Council and the La Orotava Town Hall for the conditioning of the section of the island road TF-21 between the northern Villa area and Aguamansa. A work long demanded by residents and the municipality aimed at improving road safety and pedestrian traffic through sidewalks, lighting improvements, and street crossings, as well as more connectivity and services for the high neighbourhoods where, said Dávila, “people risk their lives daily”. The project aims to condition the section between Hacienda Perdida and Aguamansa, passing by Barroso, Colombo, Cañeño, and Camino de Chasna. The improvement of traffic safety will be achieved through the geometric correction of layout elements and pavement enhancement. The budget amounts to 38,729,147 Euros, including IGIC at a 7% rate, with an execution period of 24 months.

Lope Afonso reported on several initiatives in this area totalling around 10 million Euros. Firstly, the awarding of the contract for the supply and installation of furniture for the Insular Center of Volunteer Entities, “with the aim of improving and modernising the facilities, providing a more functional and suitable environment for the entities’ activities,” the vice president stated. The contract is worth 123,375 Euros and has a four-month execution period.

On the other hand, the multi-year expense approval was made for the contracting of the public residential and daytime care service for intellectually disabled adults with high support needs in dependent situations at CAMP La Cuesta. This service will assist 65 people with 20 residential care places and 45 day care spots. The initiative will also hire a total of 57 workers for a total amount of 9,267,557 Euros.

Additionally, the Government Council approved the bases and the call for subsidies for projects aimed at children and adolescents in situations of social exclusion or at risk of it. To promote two lines of subsidies for this purpose, 200,000 Euros are made available, “compared to the 77,000 of the previous year,” explained Afonso. Of these, 80,000, 10,000 per project, are for entities, and 120,000 for support and intervention, 20,000 for each initiative.

The Council approved two agreements between the Council and the municipalities of Arona and San Miguel de Abona within the 2022-2026 Sports Infrastructure Plan. In the first case, highlighting the adaptation of the football field Villa Isabel (El Fraile) for 3.5 million Euros over three years, while in San Miguel, interventions are planned at the Jonay Risco Sports-Cultural Centre (138,153 Euros); Skatepark (245,000) and Juanito Marrero Football Field in Las Zocas (193,200). Also, the bases for competitive grant subsidies were approved to cover current management, administration, and ordinary activity expenses of Tenerife sports federations and the acquisition of inventory material during 2024. The allocated credit amounts to 400,000 Euros distributed in 212,000 for the first block and 188,000 for the second.
