RESCUE OPERATION IN CANARY ISLANDS | 9 individuals saved by helicopter from a sinking boat 111 kilometres off the coast of El Hierro

The Helimer 206 helicopter rescued nine people on Monday from a canoe that was sinking 111 kilometres south of La Restinga, in El Hierro, as reported by Maritime Rescue to EFE.

The 15 to 20-metre long vessel was located by a tanker en route from Brazil to Cartagena, the Beskidy, which alerted the Spanish authorities that it was in a very compromised situation, semi-submerged.

Maritime Rescue promptly dispatched their rescue helicopter based in Tenerife, as well as two boats, the Salvamar Adhara and a patrol boat from the Civil Guard, to assist.

The shipwrecked individuals will be transported to El Hierro to receive the necessary medical attention.

Meanwhile, the Salvamar Adhara has been instructed to continue sailing towards the canoe, to confirm that there are no remaining victims on board, as reported by the Helimer rescuers.
