Unusual weather in the Canary Islands: the Government recommends extreme caution due to the risk of forest fires

He Government of the Canary Islands this Tuesday recommended taking extreme precautions in the face of the danger of fires forests, since from 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday there will be a pre-alert situation due to the risk of forest fires in El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

A situation that is not remembered as having been previously declared in January, indicates the Canarian government in a statement in which it adds that the conditions of dry and warm air, low relative humidity and unusual high temperatures at this time of year, together with The wind forecast forces us to declare a pre-alert to avoid fires.

A declaration that is made based on the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other available sources and in application of the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Care of Emergencies due to Forest Fires in the Autonomous Community of Canary Islands (Infoca).

The weather forecast points to an entry of dry and warm Saharan air with abnormally high temperatures for the time of year, with relative humidity less than 30% in the forest area and a general wind from the east and moderate southeast with areas of strong and probable maximum gusts. local 60-90 km/h.

In this sense, there is a moderate risk of a large forest fire according to the GIF index of the Government of the Canary Islands, and a variable risk of forest fire between moderate and extreme from the State Meteorological Agency.

Based on this information, the Government of the Canary Islands recommends that the population take all possible precautions to avoid the outbreak of a forest fire, including, for example, never throwing away lit cigarette butts or matches and avoiding leaving waste in the mountain.

Furthermore, you should never camp outside the areas designated for this purpose, especially in areas away from access roads and, if you see smoke in a mountain area, it is necessary to immediately call the emergency services. 1-1-2 to alert you of what is happening and give the most exact location possible of where you are seeing it.

Likewise, to avoid fires it is essential to follow the limitations established by the councils and town councils, both in terms of access to the forest area and the work that should be avoided in these areas until this risk situation ends, is explained in a statement.
