The Canary Islands officially has 24,347 more inhabitants compared to last year, according to the data collected by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in its new release of the official population figures of the Spanish municipalities, and which correspond to the revision of the registry. municipal of 2023. This represents a growth of 1.1% in a community like the Archipelago, which now registers a total population of 2,202,048 inhabitants, of which 1,061,740 live in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the 1,140 .258 remaining in Las Palmas.
Although the trend continues to be upward, to the point that 81 of the 88 Canarian municipalities now have more residents than a year ago, the increase is far from linear, as can be seen when analyzing this data.
Thus, two municipalities in Tenerife – Granadilla de Abona and Arona – are gaining more population from a proportional perspective, since the growth in Granadilla is 4.75%, corresponding to 2,495 more inhabitants, which now totals 54,942. while in Arona it is 2.67%, having 2,267 more registered residents, for a total of 85,249 inhabitants.
The descents
At the opposite pole, it is very striking to note that among the only seven Canarian municipalities that have lost residents since last year is the most populated in the Archipelago, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, now with 378,027 inhabitants, 770 less than in 2022 ( -0.2%).
The same has happened in Los Llanos de Aridane (the most populated on the Island of La Palma), which has lost 362 and is left with 20,189 (-1.7%). The other five decreases in the number of registered residents correspond to Buenavista del Norte, Tegueste and El Tanque (Tenerife), in addition to Agaete and La Aldea (Gran Canaria).
As for the other large city of the Islands, the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife maintains an upward trend after the continuous declines that occurred during the last decade, adding 707 more inhabitants this year (+0.33%), for a total of 209,395 registered.
Other notable growth is that of La Laguna, which gains 1,219 more inhabitants, going from 157,815 in 2022 to 159,034 in 2023 (+0.77%), and Santa Lucía de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), whose population increased by 1.49 % to reach 75,677 inhabitants, which is 1,117 more people than the previous year.
By islands and provinces
By island, Fuerteventura (3.3%) and El Hierro (3.1) are where, proportionally, the population has grown the most, followed by Lanzarote (1.8%), Tenerife (1.3%), La Gomera ( 1.1%), Gran Canaria (0.4%) and, finally, La Palma (0.3%).
As for the provinces, Tenerife gains more residents both in number (+13,484 compared to +10,863 in Las Palmas) and in proportion (1.27% in the west compared to 0.9% in the east).
Finally, the data provided yesterday by the INE on the updating of the municipal register during the last year reveal that in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 541,586 women are registered, while there are 520,204 men. As for Las Palmas, there are also more women (574,186) than men (566,072).
