This Thursday, the CCOO union condemned the expansion of the area with a high tourist influx in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which permits the opening of shopping centres in Cabo Llanos on Sundays and public holidays. This initiative will have repercussions for employees, who will be compelled to sacrifice their weekly rest and the chance to balance their personal and family lives.
In a statement, CCOO highlighted that working on Sundays and holidays places an additional strain on physical and mental wellbeing, creates precarious employment situations, and poses a direct risk to local businesses.
Moreover, it was noted that this policy favours large retailers at the expense of smaller establishments that enliven the city centre.
The union expressed concern that citizens fear potential tourist overcrowding resulting from this measure, pointing out that it prioritises the interests of large corporations over the requirements of residents and employees.
Additionally, they condemned the City Council’s promotion of Sunday shopping funded by taxpayers through consumer vouchers.
