The Group of Heritage Cities receives the Ciudad de Alcalá 2023 Award

The Group of World Heritage Cities of Spain, chaired by La Laguna, received this Saturday the Ciudad de Alcalá 2023 Award, in the World Heritage category, a distinction that recognizes people or institutions that have stood out for their relevant performance. in the defense and dissemination of material and intangible heritage.
The president of the Group and mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, thanked this award “which comes to recognize the work that the 15 Cities distinguished by UNESCO have been carrying out in the safeguarding of our historical sites and the commitment to the conservation of the exceptional universal goods that define us.” “It is also a recognition of the work of all the technical staff of local corporations and the entities that contribute to the defense of our heritage,” highlights the Lagunero president. The award jury has assessed that “in the Group’s 30 years of existence, an anniversary that is being celebrated in 2023, an endless number of projects and proposals have been carried out, through a political agenda of exchange of ideas and experiences. , to face and seek solutions to common problems in the maintenance of historic centers and the environmental protection of their urban spaces and buildings.”
The mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, was in charge of presenting the award, in an event that coincided with the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the declaration of the Complutense City as a World Heritage Site. “The Ciudad de Alcalá Awards constitute the great cultural award granted by the City Council to artists, creators, researchers and sociocultural institutions” and that, with this modality, for 25 years, they want to “enhance actions aimed at recovery, rehabilitation, conservation , as well as the enhancement, study and dissemination of World Heritage, both natural and cultural, material or immaterial.”
In that sense, the president highlighted that “few winners comply more rigorously with all of these requirements and demands than the Group of World Heritage Cities of Spain.”
The Group of World Heritage Cities of Spain was created in 1993 with the aim of acting jointly in the conservation, enhancement and tourism promotion of the 15 Spanish cities recognized by UNESCO.
